So, as normal it started a grey damp morning as I passed thru fields of grain and Hops (this is Bravaria, land of lager). However after an hour or so I was presented with a real dilemma. You see I had planned to cycle all the way to wherever. But… the route ended at a gorge and the bike route actually took a boat trip thru the Gorge to Kelheim. The alternative was to cross the river by a pedestrian ferry and climb out the gorge and go over the top. I decided for the later course of action – not by principle but because the first boat didn’t go for an hour and half. So it was a 40 minute slog out of the gorge followed by a 5 minute decent with burning brakes.
The next dilemma had to do with making diversion. It had to do with a certain foot bridge that had been inspiring me for the last few months. It spanned the Mainz Canal and I’d wanted to cycle it ever since I’d started thinking about this trip.
On the basis that I’d only be here one (actually second time) I, of course, made the diversion. I found it quite interesting how these two events gave me both a sense of complete satisfaction and accomplishment.
Next stop was Regensburg, which was full of visitors, so after a coffee, I continued on. I prefer places like this one.
